What is your favorite genealogy program and why? Also, what does it offer and how much does it cost? I would like to start doing genealogy again. I've used one or two programs but they didnt really bring the result I was after.... so whats your answer?

Currently, I'm using Family Tree Builder (not to be confused with FamilyTree Maker) from www.myheritage.com.

They offer a free version, which is fine for up to 250 entries, IIRC.

I've tried a number of others, including Legacy, PAF, GRAMPS. I'm currently using the Premium version of FTB, which meets most of my needs and isn't offensively expensive.

It offers an interesting feature - SmartMatches - which finds matches on a bunch of other sites. Two problems with it: it takes days to run with a large tree; and many of the matches are with Ancestry.com and other sites which themselves require a subsription.

However, MyHeritage has enough of its own users that you frequently receive notification of matches with your ancestors in other people's trees. One word of caution: Don't assume those matches are accurate - some genealogists are more optimistic than rigorous, and you need to check carefully Sad

See here for a comparison:

regards,

William
