In the Eighties president Reagan invited part of higher German nobility in the White House. Some of the Guest felt insulted because there was a prince among them, who received the title by bargaining with an old lady princess, a pour woman, abondened from her relatives, living of little more than social aid standard in a poor living quarter and we don´t know how this transaktion title-for-money happened in all details. We even do not get informed which kind of facilities could be helpful to make such transaction title for money a little bit easier. The self made prince however did not only bewitch rich people like the Begum with his title to be allowed to balance part of her fortune for a couple of years, he also sold his new title to all kind of people, not only to multiply the money he had invested, but reduce the reputation of it to a very low level. Reagans guests, among them Earl Karl von Württemberg with his wife, did not only feel insulted, they also argued about leaving the banquette, but they didn´t because they imagined the press, they would cause worldwide.
Does somebody know if the American president knew what kind of feeling he would cause?

Sorry, nobody corrected my fault all the while: Karl von Württemberg´s title is of corse not "Earl", he is "Duke", probably even the houses of South-West-Germany did not remark this error!

Do you know more nobles who received their titles by clever calculation like the new ´Prinz von Anhalt´? I remember two in France, who were engaged in strange doings during the last 40 years. One´s family received his title as an extra payment dealing blank arms, the other family bought a castle in very awful condition which included a title. Funny anough, both were very ambitious contemporaries, one in spekulative industry-investment, the other as a politician and they pretended, ´there never was an interest to receve a title, it came just beside´!
