Dr Andrew Felix Verney, MRCS, LRCP, who died 26 February, 2000, aged 78, was the fourth son of Sir Harry Calvert Williams Verney, 4th Baronet, DSO, and the former Lady Rachel Catherine Bruce, daughter of the 9th Earl of Elgin and Kincardine.
The engagement was announced, 3 October, 2000, of Mr Harry Verney, (b.1960), son of Mr Peter Verney, author, of the Verney Baronets, and his 1st wife, Caroline, and Sarah, daughter of Mr & Mrs Stanley Cotton, of Thorp Arch, Yorkshire. It is Harry's third attempt at marriage. His 2nd wife, Lavinia, was daughter of Sir Evelyn Delves Broughton, 12th Baronet.
Sarah Verney [nee Cotton] wife of Harry Verney, gave birth to a son Ralph George Stanley, a brother for Harriet, 21 March, 2001. [Verney Baronetcy, 1818].
A Daily Telegraph death notice, 20 August, 2001, announced the passing of Sir Ralph Bruce Verney, Bt..."peacefully at home on August 17, aged 86. Dearly beloved by his wife Mary, his children, Edmund, Sarah, Janey and Francesca and his six grandchildren. Family funeral at All Saints Church, Middle Claydon, on Thursday August 23 at 3pm..." Verney was Vice-Lord Lieutenant [formerly Vice-Lieutenant] of Buckinghamshire, 1965-84, a JP, and a landowner, he was appointed KBE in 1974. The fifth Baronet was born 18 January, 1915, son of Sir Harry Calvert Williams Verney, 4th Bt, DSO, and Lady Rachel Bruce [d. 1964] daughter of the 9th Earl of Elgin and Kincardine KG. He succeeded to the baronetcy in 1974. His wife Mary, whom he married in 1948, was the daughter of Percy Charles Vestey, of the Vestey Baronets. Sir Ralph held numerous public appointments, inc chairman of the Nature Conservancy Council, 1980-3; the Forestry Commission, Milton Keynes New Town Corporation, &c. &c. The successor to the baronetcy, is the son Edmund Ralph, born 28 June, 1950. An article in the Daily Telegraph [4 May, 1992], revealed some 'colourful' family history: "Sir Ralph Verney was taking a hard line yesterday on his ne'er-do-well ancestor Sir Francis Verney, whose silk dressing gown is on loan to the National Maritime Museum's Pirates exhibition. Sir Francis, knighted at the Tower in 1604, sold his estate and, to escape his scolding wife, ran off to fight for Muley Sidan, pretender to the throne of Morocco. Sidan's defeat led to the colourful good-for-nothing "turning Turk" and becoming a pirate." A promising second career was cut short when he was captured and sold as a galley slave. He suffered terribly under the Moors apparently. Sir Francis's oriental dressing gown, trimmed with fur-look silk, was brought back to the Verney pile, Claydon House, Buckinghamshire, after his death, where it remained for over 350 years. Sir Francis's half-brother's son, Thomas, was another black sheep. He was a highwayman who fled to Barbados and set up as a sugar planter. The baronetcy was awarded, in 1818, to one General Harry Calvert, Governor of Chelsea Hospital, and the surname of Verney was assumned by his successor, Sir Harry, 2nd Baronet, after succeeding to the estates of his cousin, Mrs Catherine Verney in 1827. The Verney surname crops up in the pedigrees of other peers, i.e. Baroness Braye and Lord Willoughby de Broke. And a second Verney baronetcy was created in 1946 [that of Verney of Eaton Square] for a grandson of Sir Harry Verney, 2nd Baronet, of Claydon House.
Professor Richard Mervyn Hare, FBA, moral philosopher, who died 29 January, 2002, aged 82, was husband of Catherine Verney, daughter of Sir Harry Calvert Verney, DSO, 4th Baronet. Their son is Professor John Edmund Hare, of Grand Rapids, Michigan.
Hugh Alexander Verney, who was b. 14 April, 1920, third son of Sir
Harry Calvert Williams Verney, 4th Baronet, (of Claydon House), by his wife, the former Lady Rachel Catherine Bruce, daughter of the 9th Earl of Elgin & Kincardine, KG, died 14 January, 2004. He was married and leaves issue.
The engagement was announced 20 August, 2004, between Alistair Francis Verney (b. 1976), scion of the Verney Baronets, of Claydon House, eldest son of Robert Francis (Robin) Verney (b. 1949), of South Cadbury, Somerset, by his wife Marianne, & Frances M. Ryan, daughter of Group Captain Paul Ryan, of Beverley, East Yorkshire, by his wife Myfanwy. Alistair Verney is a great-grandson of Sir Harry Calvert Williams Verney, 4th Baronet, DSO, who married in 1911, Lady Rachel Catherine Bruce, daughter of the 9th Earl of Elgin & Kincardine, KG.
