Michael Rhodes

Thomas Steuart Gladstone of Capenoch, JP, who acquired the Scottish estate in 1850, was the father of:-

S.S. Gladstone of Capenoch, who left an only son:-

Sir Hugh Steuart Gladstone, of Capenoch, Kt, JP, FZS, FRSE, FSA; Lord Lieutenant of Dumfriesshire from 1946; (b. 30 April, 1877; d. 5 April, 1949); Member of the Council of the Zoological Society of London; Chairman, International Committee for Protection of Birds (British Section), 1923-29; was knighted in 1941; married 1907, Cecil Emily (d. 6 July, 1949), the eldest daughter of Gustavus Chetwynd-Talbot, MP (1848-1920) (scion of the Earls of Shrewsbury), by his wife, Susan Frances Elwes, dau of Robert Elwes, of Congham Hall, Norfolk, by whom he had issue, three sons and one dau. The eldest son:-

John Gladstone of Capenoch, TD (b. 1908, d. 1977); served in the Second World War with the King's Own Scottish Borderers; Justice of the Peace for Dumfriesshire (1950), a County Councillor for Dumfriesshire 1953-67; Chairman of Thornhill District Council, 1955-67; resident at Capenoch, Penpont, Dumfriesshire/Craichlaw, Kirkowan, Wigtowshire; Sörkilmo, Sona, Trondheim, Norway. He married firstly, 29 Sept, 1936, (divorced 1947), Alison Frances Henniker-Hughan, 3rd dau of Admiral Sir Arthur John Henniker-Hughan, 6th Baronet, CB, MP. He married secondly, 1950, Diana, eldest daughter of W.M. Fleming Hamilton (d. 1931) of Craichlaw, Wigtownshire and of Sörkilmo, Norway, by whom he had 2 sons and 2 daughters, of whom:-

(i) Robert Hamilton Gladstone of Capenoch; great-great grandson of Thomas Steuart Gladstone, JP, who acquired Capenoch in 1850; b. 17 July, 1953; educated at Eton, and Magdalene College, Cambridge (MA); married 16 January, 1982, Margaret Jane, daughter of Brigadier Berenger Colborne Bradford, DSO, MBE, MC, of Kincardineshire; by whom he had issue, twins, John and Harry, b. 3 March, 1983, and a daughter Catherine, b. 13 April, 1986. He is a chartered surveyor; ARICS 1977.

(ii) Julia Gladstone, who married, June, 1985, Humphrey Smith, of Oxton Hall, Tadcaster, Yorkshire, and has issue (now see Woollcombe family update)

He married Muriel (surname unknown) who was born circa 1904. They had issue, Juliet, Christopher, David and Robert. Muriel died 6 June, 1995, aged 91. (Daily Tel. 8 Jun 1995)

Evelyn L. Gladstone (nee Milligan), wife of John B. Gladstone, scion of the Gladstone of Capenoch landed family, gave birth to a daughter, Isla Clementine, 19 January, 2012. John is a son of Mr and Mrs Robert Gladstone, of Capenoch, Dumfriesshire, and Evelyn is a daughter of Mr and Mrs Iain Milligan, of Dunesslin, Dumfriesshire.
