Hello from New Zealand. Croeso.

I am writing a history here in Central Otago, New Zealand.
A young woman died here in 1874. Henrietta nee Tait, wife
of Boaventura de Bettencor. The family maintain that Henrietta's sister was married to Randall Davidson who became Bishop of Canterbury.

That being so, and since Archbishop Davidson succeeded his father-in law
Archibald Campbell Tait, that would have made Henrietta the daughter of the latter gentleman.

From research is appears Archbishop Tait, as he became, lost five of his children to scarlet fever in 1856. He also lost his only son Crauford and his wife in 1878. Henrietta is given as born in 1847. We have a limited family tree which shows that Henrietta had a sister Annie who married Alfred Lage b. 1838 d. 1880.

We know that Archibald and Catharine Tait had at least one surviving daughter Edith who married Archbishop Randall Davidson.

I am aware that the peerage of both gentlemen was not hereditary and that their subsequent pedigree may not be of enormous import. However any information as to the authenticity of this connection would be gratefully received.

dioch yn fawr iawn,

David George.

CROMWELL
New Zealand.

I found the following site which lists the Tait children:

Link

If Henrietta was a daughter of this family, I don't see how she could have been born in 1847 as Mary Susan Tait was born on 20th June 1847. The previous child was born 15th March 1846, and the succeeding one in the third quarter of 1849.

I looked on the 1851 England Census but can't see the family at all. On the 1861 England Census the household for Dover, Kent, is given as Archibald Tait, wife Catherine, children Cranfurd (11), Lucy (5), Edith (2), Agnes (under 10 months), plus 3 servants. There is also no birth record for a Henrietta Tait or Tate with parents Archibald and Catharine.

Yes, thank you very much.
Your information is very helpfull.
In the interim I was able to access the biography
of Archbishop Tait and discovered that there would have been
one surviving daughter not present in 1861- Catherine Anne b. 18 Apri; 1846.

Dealing with oral family history is interesting in itself. It is a natural inclination for people to want to link themselves with the nobility and
with royalty.

DG.

Have just established Henrietta was the the daughter of Henry Carr Tate a General in the Royal Marines who died aged 90 in 1901 on the Isle of Wight. Confirmed this relationship with Vic de Bettencor. I presume the sister who married bishop of Canterbury, NZ was the wrong sister from the wrong family. Henrietta's sister Annie married Alfred Lage who died 1n 1880 in Melbourne, don't know what became of Annie

Hi Jack. I would be interested in seeing the deeds or knowing what details are in the deeds, which house, and a signature particularly. my email is dave.wichbold@mypostoffice.co.uk.
Thanks for putting your post on this site, Dave
