The Rt Hon Edward Watson Short, PC, the life peer Baron Glenamara, who died 4 May 2012, aged 99, was a Cabinet Minister in the Labour administrations of Harold Wilson, and at the time of his death was the oldest living former member of the House of Commons. Ted Short was born 17 Dec 1912, and served as MP (Lab) Newcastle upon Tyne, 1951-76, Government Chief Whip, 1964-66, Postmaster General, 1966-68, Sec of State for Education and Science 1968-70, Deputy Leader of the Labour Party 1972-76, Lord President of the Council and Leader of the House of Commons 1974-76; cr PC 1964; CH, 1976. Created a life peer in 1977, as Baron Glenamara, of Glenridding in the county of Cumbria, &c.
Lord Glenamara married in 1941, Jennie Sewell, by whom he had a son and a daughter.
