The Baron Trotman, chairman and chief executive officer of Ford from 1993 until the end of 1998, and non-executive chairman of ICI in 2002 and 2003, died Monday 25 April, 2005, at the age of 71.

He had been taken ill very suddenly at his home in Osmotherley, North Yorkshire, and died at Friarage Hospital, Northallerton.

Alexander James Trotman was born 22 July, 1933. He was knighted in 1996 and was created a life peer as Baron Trotman, of Osmotherley, in the county of North Yorkshire, in 1999.

The English-born, Scottish-educated Trotman led the Ford Motor Car Company from late 1993 until the end of 1998. During that period it became the most profitable car maker in the world, and in 1997 it earned more than any other company had made in a single year – nearly $7bn. He joined Ford of Britain as a student trainee in the purchasing department in 1955 and moved to the United States in 1969. After a series of executive appointments for Ford in Europe, North America and Asia he was elected to the Ford board on January 1, 1993.
