     Sir Robert Chapman, 1st Bt. was born on 3 March 1880.1 He was the son of Henry Chapman and Dora Gibson.2 He married Hélène Paris MacGowan, daughter of James George MacGowan, on 10 November 1909.1 He died on 31 July 1963 at age 83.1
     He was educated at South Shields High School, South Shields, County Durham, EnglandG.1 He graduated from London University, London, EnglandG, in 1899 with a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.)1 He was registered as a Member, Institute of Chartered Accountants (A.C.A.) in 1902.1 He fought in the First World War, where he was wounded and mentioned in despatches four times.1 He was awarded the Distinguished Service Order (D.S.O.) in 1916.1 He gained the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel in 1916 in the Royal Field Artillery (Territorial Forces.)1 He was awarded the Chevalier, Legion of Honour in 1917.1 He was awarded the Territorial Decoration (T.D.) in 1918.1 He was appointed Companion, Order of St. Michael and St. George (C.M.G.) in 1918.1 He was appointed Fellow, Institute of Chartered Accountants (F.C.A.) in 1919.1 He held the office of Justice of the Peace (J.P.) for South Shields in 1920.1 He held the office of Deputy Lieutenant (D.L.) of County Durham in 1921.1 He gained the rank of Brevet Colonel in 1924.1 He gained the rank of Colonel in 1925.1 He held the office of Justice of the Peace (J.P.) for County Durham in 1930.1 He was a senior partner of Henry Chapman Son & Company.1 He held the office of Mayor of South Shields between 1931 and 1932.1 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) (Conservative) for Houghton-le-Spring between 1931 and 1935.1 He was Honrary Colonel of the 74th Field Regiment Royal Artillery between 1935 and 1950.1 He retired from the military in 1937.1 He held the office of High Sheriff of County Durham in 1940.1 He was appointed Companion, Order of the Bath (C.B.) in 1944.1 He was appointed Commander, Order of the British Empire (C.B.E.) in 1945.1 He held the office of Vice-Lord-Lieutenant of Hampshire in 1946.1 He held the office of Vice-Lord-Lieutenant of Hampshire in 1949.1 He was appointed Officer, Most Venerable Order of the Hospital of St. John of Jerusalem (O.St.J.)1 He was appointed Knight in 1950.1 He was created 1st Baronet Chapman, of Underhill, Cleadon, near Sunderland, co. Durham U.K. on 30 January 1958.1
