     Colonel John Hay was the son of Thomas Hay, 7th Earl of Kinnoull and Hon. Margaret Drummond.2 A contract for the marriage of Colonel John Hay and Hon. Marjory Murray was signed on 2 June 1715.1 He died on 24 September 1740, without issue.1
     In 1715 he was a Jacobite.1 In 1716 he was attainted.1 He was created 1st Earl of Inverness [Scotland] on 5 October 1718, Jacobite.1 He was Acting Jacobite Secretary of State between 1724 and 1727.1 He was created 1st Baron Hay [Scotland] on 3 April 1727, Jacobite.1 He was created 1st Duke of Inverness [Scotland] on 4 April 1727, Jacobite.1 He lived at Cromlix, ScotlandG.1
