     Maj.-Gen. James Charles Hope Johnstone was born posthumously on 11 June 1835.1 He was the son of Commander Charles James Hope Johnstone and Eliza Wood.1 He married Mary Fanny Ellen Hankey, daughter of William Hankey, on 17 May 1859.1 He died on 6 October 1884 at age 49, without issue.1
     Maj.-Gen. James Charles Hope Johnstone gained the rank of Major-General in the service of the Royal Artillery.1
