He was born on 6 July 1866 at Rudenhausen, Germany. He married, firstly, Sophie Ottilie Gräfin von Faber, daughter of Baron Wilhelm von Faber and Bertha Faber, on 28 February 1898. He married, secondly, Margit Gräfin Zedtwitz von Moravan und Duppau, daughter of Curt Graf Zedtwitz von Moravan und Duppau, on 15 July 1920. He died on 11 April 1928 at Oberstdorf, Germany.
