Brig.-Gen. James Agnew, 2nd of Howlish Hall was the son of Major James Agnew, 1st of Howlish Hall and Elizabeth Wilkinson.1 He married Elizabeth Saunders.1 He died on 4 October 1777 at Germanstown, Pennsylvania, U.S.A., killed in action.1
Brig.-Gen. James Agnew, 2nd of Howlish Hall was a grandson of Sir James Agnew of Lochnaw, 4th Baronet.2 He held the office of Aide-de-Camp to King George III in 1775.1 He fought in the Battle of Brandywine on 11 June 1777, where he commanded a division.1 He fought in the Battle of Germanstown on 4 October 1777.1

James Agnew, 2nd of Howlish Hall and Elizabeth Saunders.1 He married Catherine Blennerhassett, daughter of Conway Blennerhassett and Elizabeth Lacy, they were the parents of one son who died without issue and four daughters.2 He died in 1787.2
