Richard Butler, 3rd Viscount Mountgarret1

     Richard Butler, 3rd Viscount Mountgarret was born circa 1578.2 He was the son of Edmund Butler, 2nd Viscount Mountgarret and Grizel FitzPatrick.3 He married, firstly, Margaret O'Neill, daughter of Hugh O'Neill, 3rd Earl of Tyrone and Siobhan O'Donnell, before 8 October 1596.3 He married, secondly, Thomasine Elizabeth Andrews, daughter of Sir William Andrews, before 1617/18.2 He married, thirdly, Margaret Branthwaite, daughter of Richard Branthwaite, before 23 July 1631.2 He died in 1651.2
     He succeeded as the 3rd Viscount Mountgarret, co. Wexford [I., 1550] on 24 November 1602.2 He held the office of Joint Governor of County Kilkenny in 1641, at the start of the uprising by the Confederation of Kilkenny, but soon switched over to the Confederation.2 He held the office of President of the Supreme Confederation of Kilkenny between 1642 and 1648.2 He fought in the Battle of Kilrush on 15 April 1642, in charge of the Irish forces.2 He gained the rank of Battle of Liscarrol on 3 September 1642.2 On 28 March 1646 he negotiated a peace.2 He has an extensive biographical entry in the Dictionary of National Biography.4

Margaret O'Neill1

     Margaret O'Neill was the daughter of Hugh O'Neill, 3rd Earl of Tyrone and Siobhan O'Donnell.1,2 She married Richard Butler, 3rd Viscount Mountgarret, son of Edmund Butler, 2nd Viscount Mountgarret and Grizel FitzPatrick, before 8 October 1596.3 She died on 16 December 1655.3
     From before 8 October 1596, her married name became Butler.1 After her marriage, Margaret O'Neill was styled as Viscountess Mountgarret on 24 November 1602.

     Sir Richard Butler, 2nd Bt. was the son of Sir Walter Butler, 1st Bt. and Hon. Elizabeth Butler.1 He married Elizabeth (?)1 He died in 1679/80 at GermanyG.1 His will (dated 16 Novemeber 1678) was proven (by probate) on 20 January 1680 at IrelandG.1
     He succeeded as the 2nd Baronet Butler, of Poulstoun, co. Kilkenny [I., 1645] circa 1650.1 He lived at Polestown, Gowran, County Kilkenny, IrelandG.2

     Sir Walter Butler, 3rd Bt. was born circa 1678.1 He was the son of Sir Richard Butler, 2nd Bt. and Elizabeth (?)1 He married, firstly, Lucy Butler, daughter of Walter Butler and Mary Plunkett, in April 1697.1 He married, secondly, unknown wife (?) before 1706.1 He and unknown wife (?) were separated and she went to live in London.1 He died on 8 October 1723.1 He died intestate and his estate was administered on 14 March 1723/24 at IrelandG.1
     He succeeded as the 3rd Baronet Butler, of Poulstoun, co. Kilkenny [I., 1645] in 1679/80.1 Before 1706 He was a "dissolute spendthrift and drunkard" and was "delirious and of non sane memory."1

     Sir Edmund Butler, 4th Bt. was born circa 1708.1 He was the son of Sir Walter Butler, 3rd Bt. and unknown wife (?)1 He died between September 1762 and October 1762 at Paris, FranceG, without male issue.1
     He succeeded as the 4th Baronet Butler, of Poulstoun, co. Kilkenny [I., 1645] on 8 October 1723.1 He gained the rank of Colonel of Horse in the French Army.1
     On his death, his baronetcy became extinct.1
