     William Anstruther-Gray of Kilmany and Carntyne was born on 6 September 1859.1 He was the son of John Anstruther-Thomson of Charleton and Carntyne and Caroline Maria Agnes Robina Gray.2 He married Clayre Jessie Tennant, daughter of Andrew Tennant, on 26 January 1891.1 He died on 17 April 1938 at age 78.1
     He was given the name of William Anstruther at birth.2 He held the office of Deputy Lieutenant (D.L.) of Lanarkshire.1 He held the office of Justice of the Peace (J.P.) for Lanarkshire.1 He was Aide-de-Camp to the Governor of South Australia.1 He held the office of Justice of the Peace (J.P.) for Fife.1 In 1904 his name was legally changed to William Anstruther-Gray of Kilmany and Carntyne.1 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for St. Andrews between 1906 and 1910.1 He was appointed Fellow, Society of Antiquaries (F.S.A.)1 He was appointed Fellow, Royal Geographical Society (F.R.G.S.)1 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for St. Andrews between 1910 and 1918.1 He gained the rank of Major in the Scottish Horse and Royal Horse Guards (Blues.)1 He gained the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel in the Territorial Army Reserve.1
