     Charles Abbot, 1st Baron Colchester of Colchester was born on 14 October 1757.1 He was the son of Reverend John Abbot and Sarah Farr.1 He married Elizabeth Gibbes, daughter of Sir Philip Gibbes, 1st Bt., on 29 December 1796.1 He died on 8 May 1829 at age 71.1
     He was educated at Westminster School, Westminster, London, EnglandG.1 He graduated from Christ Church, Oxford University, Oxford, Oxfordshire, EnglandG, in 1783 with a Bachelor of Civil Law (B.C.L.)1 He was admitted to Middle Temple in 1783 entitled to practise as a barrister.1 He was Vinerian Fellow between 1786 and 1792 at Christ Church, Oxford University, Oxford, Oxfordshire, EnglandG.1 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Helston in 1790.1 He graduated from Christ Church, Oxford University, Oxford, Oxfordshire, EnglandG, in 1793 with a Doctor of Civil Law (D.C.L.)1 He was Clerk of the Rules, Court of the King's Bench in 1794.1 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Helston between 1795 and 1802.1 He held the office of Chief Secretary of Ireland between 1801 and 1802.1 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Woodstock between 1802 and 1806.1 He held the office of Speaker of the House of Commons between 1802 and 1817.1 He held the office of Bencher of the Middle Temple.1 He was created 1st Baron Colchester of Colchester, co. Essex [U.K.] on 3 June 1817.1 He held the office of Trustee of the British Museum between 1818 and 1829.1 He has an extensive biographical entry in the Dictionary of National Biography.2
