Major James Oliphant was born on 31 January 1886.1 He was the son of Reverend Frederick James Oliphant and Constance Beresford.1 He married Grace Isobel Hudsen, daughter of George Bickersteth Hudsen, on 26 October 1914.1 He died on 13 June 1957 at age 71.1
Major James Oliphant was educated at St. Lawrence College, Ramsgate, Kent, England.2 He graduated from Emmanuel College, Cambridge University, Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, England, with a Master of Arts (M.A.).2 He gained the rank of Lieutenant in 1914 in the service of the 1st Canadian Division.2 He fought in the First World War between 1914 and 1919, where he was mentioned in despatches.2 He gained the rank of Captain in 1916.2 He was decorated with the award of Croix de Guerre.2 He gained the rank of Major in 1918.2
