John Blake was the son of Nicholas Blake and Juliana ffrench.1 He married Mary French.1 He died in 1680 at Mullaghmore, Tyaquin, County Galway, Ireland, intestate.1
John Blake presented a petition to the Commissioners of Plantation (when the Lord Deputy, Sir Thomas Wentwort, Earl of Strafford, was carrying out his scheme for the plantation of Connaught), accompanied by his pedigree and other ancient documents, upon which they certified that he was the lineal and eldest descendant of Richard Caddell, alias Blake, Sheriff of Connaught in 1306, and awarded him the claimed properties.
To prove his ancestral title to lands of Kiltorroge, Ballymacroe and Kiltollagh, the petition states that the petitioner's ancestors "did plant thereabouts, being an auncient English familye, and there continued without chandge of languadge, manners, or habit, and without once matching with any Irish familye since the nynth yeare of King Edward the Second....That the petivioner is the eleaventh masculyn English descent lyneally descended from father to the sonn, in the possession of the sayd lands from Richard Caddle dicto Nigro....And that although the petivioner after soe long a tracte of tyme, be called Blake of Niger, yett in the offices taken post mortem of his auncestors, they were called Blake alias Caddle". The Commissioners reported "Wee doe fynd by auncient evidences some without date by the auncient characters whereof wee conceave the same to have ben made in the Raygne of King Edward the First, and some others bearinge date in the sixt yeare of the Raigne of King Edward the First, that the Mannor and lands of Kiltorroge...and the towne and lands of Ballym'croe....were then granted unto Richard Caddle dicto Nigro and his heirs by deed dated the 9th yeare of King Edward the Second....And wee further fynd that the peticioner the sayd John Blake alias Caddle did by a petegree produced before us and proved by severall matters of recorde and by divers and sundrie auncient wills and deeds made by his auncestors, prove himself to be heire male of the boddye of the said Richard Caddle dicto Nigro....Uppon all which we conceave....tha the said John Blake alias Caddle....being of an auncient Englishe blood and surname, have and doth contynewe in the possessions by him held as aforesaid....Given at his Majesties Inns the 5th of June, 1640, Richard Bolton, Chancellor; Garrat Lowther."1 He held the office of Mayor of Galway in 1646.1 In 1655 his ancestral estates were confiscated by the Cromwellian Commissioners, and he was transplanted to Mullaghmore, Tyaquin, County Galway, Ireland.1
