     Major Richard William Hewett was born on 22 October 1923.¹ He is the son of Brigadier William George Hewett and Louise Susan Wolfe.² He married Rosemary Cridland, daughter of Basil E Cridland, on 24 July 1954.¹
     Major Richard William Hewett was educated at Wellington College, Wellington, Berkshire, England.¹ He fought in the Second World War.¹ He gained the rank of Major in the service of the Royal Artillery.¹ He fought in the Malayan Emergency in 1953, where he was mentioned in despatches.¹ He was chairman and managing director of Readers Digest UK.¹ He was director of international operations for Readers Digest USA between 1986 and 1988.¹
