     Reverend William Stuart Macgowan was born in 1864.1 He was the son of Alexander Thorburn Macgowan and Elizabeth Yorstoun Stuart.2 He married, firstly, Inez Ansell Passingham, daughter of George Augustus Passingham and Catherine Amy Staples, on 24 April 1889.1 He married, secondly, Emily Amelia Coles, daughter of John Coles, in 1937.1 He died on 6 July 1939.1
     Reverend William Stuart Macgowan was educated at Neuwied, Prussia.1 He was educated at Bristol Grammar School, Bristol, Gloucestershire, England.1 He was educated at King's College, Cambridge University, Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, England.1 He was the Principal between 1902 and 1909 at St. Andrew's School, Grahamstown, Cape Town, Cape Province, South Africa.1 He was member of the council at Rhodes University, Grahamstown, Cape Province, South Africa.1 He was member of the council at University of the Cape of Good Hope, Cape Town, Cape Province, South Africa.1 He wrote the book The Religious Philosophy of Rudolf Eucken, published 1914.1 He was decorated with the award of Chevalier, Legion of Honour.1
