Sir James Makgill was the son of James Makgill and Elizabeth Cunningham.2 He married Helen Wardlaw, daughter of Sir Henry Wardlaw of Torrie, circa 7 March 1536.1 He died in 1553.1
He was allegedly an early supporter of the Reformation.1 He held the office of Provost of Edinburgh, during the reign of King James V.1 He sold his lands in Galloway and the lands of Park of Stibbery, Lanarkshire between 1526 and 1536.1 On 7 September 1538 he acquired by charter lands of Liberton Burn and Senis, near Edinburgh.1
