     Arthur Melvin John Macartney-Filgate was born on 16 September 1893.1 He was the son of Charles Alexander Hume Macartney-Filgate and Mary Stuart Griffiths.2 He married Gladys Aston, daughter of A. J. Aston, in 1934.1 He died on 18 October 1967 at age 74.1
     He was educated at St. Andrew's College, Dublin, County Dublin, Ireland.1 He fought in the First World War, with Royal Munster Rifles and Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers.1
