     John Matheson, 2nd of Bennetsfield was the son of Alexander Matheson, 1st of Bennetsfield and Isobel Mackenzie.2 He married, firstly, Elizabeth Mackenzie, daughter of William Mackenzie of Belmaduthy.1 He married, secondly, Christina Gordon, daughter of John Gordon.1 He died on 21 February 1768.1
     He fought in the Battle of Culloden on 16 April 1746, and escaped afterwards.1 He had four daughters by his first wife and two daughters by his second wife.1
