     Gilbert Joshua Smith was born on 17 December 1843.1 He was the son of Spencer Smith and Frances Anne Seymour.1 He married Edith Charlotte Pelham, daughter of Captain Hon. Dudley Worsley Pelham, on 10 August 1875.2 He died on 4 February 1928 at age 84.1
     He was Captain 85th KLI and 3rd Battalion Hampshire Regiment.2
