Joseph Austin Petre was born on 18 October 1893. He was the son of Francis William Petre and Margaret Cargill. He married Eleanor Norton, daughter of H. H. Norton, in April 1921. He married Leonora Agnes Sunley, daughter of Robert M. Sunley, on 17 January 1940. He died in 1972.
