Thomas Dundas, 2nd Earl of Zetland was born on 5 February 1795.1 He was the son of Lawrence Dundas, 1st Earl of Zetland and Harriot Hale.1 He married Sophia Jane Williamson, daughter of Sir Hedworth Williamson, 6th Bt., on 6 September 1823.1 He died on 6 May 1873 at age 78.1
He was educated at Harrow School, Harrow on the Hill, London, England.1 He graduated from Trinity College, Cambridge University, Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, England, in 1815 with a Master of Arts (M.A.).1 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) (Whig) for Richmond between 1818 and 1830.1 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) (Whig) for York between 1830 and 1832.1 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) (Whig) for York between 1833 and 1834.1 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) (Whig) for Richmond between 1835 and 1839.1 He held the office of Lord-Lieutenant of the North Riding, Yorkshire between 1839 and 1873.1 He succeeded to the title of 3rd Baron Dundas of Aske, co. York [G.B., 1794] on 19 February 1839.1 He succeeded to the title of 2nd Earl of Zetland [U.K., 1838] on 19 February 1839.1 He succeeded to the title of 4th Baronet Dundas, of Kerse, co. Stirling [G.B., 1762] on 19 February 1839.1 He was invested as a Knight, Order of the Thistle (K.T.) between 1861 and 1872.1 He was invested as a Knight, Order of the Garter (K.G.) in 1872.1
