     Henry Edward Duke, 1st Baron Merrivale was born on 5 November 1855.1 He was the son of William Edward Duke and Elizabeth Ann Lord.2 He married Sarah Shorland, daughter of John Shorland, in 1876.1 He died on 20 May 1939 at age 83.1
     He was admitted to Gray's Inn entitled to practise as a barrister.1 He held the office of Recorder of Plymouth between 1897 and 1900.1 He held the office of Recorder of Devonport between 1897 and 1914.1 He was appointed Queen's Counsel (Q.C.) in 1899.1 He held the office of Bencher of Gray's Inn in 1899.1 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) (Conservative) for Plymouth between 1900 and 1906.1 He was arbitrator of joint appointment of GWR Company and its employees under Railway Conciliation Scheme in 1907.1 He held the office of Treasurer of Gray's Inn in 1908.1 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.)      Edward Duke, 2nd Baron Merrivale was born on 22 May 1883.1 He was the son of Henry Edward Duke, 1st Baron Merrivale and Sarah Shorland.2 He married, firstly, Odette Roger, daughter of Edmond Roger, in 1912.1 He and Odette Roger were divorced in 1939.1 He married, secondly, Meta Therese Amelia Wolczon, daughter of Joseph Herman Wolczon, on 5 April 1939.1 He died on 8 June 1951 at age 68.1
     He fought in the Boer War between 1900 and 1902.1 He was educated at Dulwich College, Dulwich, Surrey, EnglandG.1 He was educated at Neuchâtel University, Neuchâtel, SwitzerlandG.1 He was admitted to Gray's Inn in 1908 entitled to practise as a barrister.1 He fought in the First World War.1 He gained the rank of Captain in the Devonshire Regiment.1 He was appointed Officer, Order of the British Empire (O.B.E.) in 1918.1 He held the office of President of Probate, Divorce and Admiralty Division, High Court between 1919 and 1933.1 He held the office of Justice of the Peace (J.P.) for Devon.1 He succeeded as the 2nd Baron Merrivale, of Walkhampton, co.      Hon. Violet Duke was the daughter of Henry Edward Duke, 1st Baron Merrivale and Sarah Shorland.2 She married, firstly, Major Frederick John Stockham Davis in 1912.1 She married, secondly, Reverend Marcus Ethelbert Atlay in 1922.1 She died on 8 May 1958.1
     From 1912, her married name became Davis. From 1922, her married name became Atlay.1
