     Lt.-Col. John Nairne was the son of John Murray, Master of Nairne and Lady Catherine Murray.2 He married Brabazon Wheeler, daughter of Richard Wheeler, circa 1756.1 He died on 7 November 1782.1
     He gained the rank of Ensign in 1742 in the service of the Regular Army.1 He gained the rank of Captain in 1747 in the service of the 1st Foot.1 He gained the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel.1 He succeeded to the title of 3rd Lord Nairne [S., 1681] on 11 July 1770, de jure.1 He held the office of Lord Provost of St. Andrews before 1782.1
