Austen Havelock Layard was born on 20 February 1895.1 He was the son of Sir Charles Peter Layard and Ada Alexandrina Julius.1 He married, firstly, Irene Beatrice King, daughter of Frederick Hamilton King, on 3 January 1927 at Bombay, India.1 He married, secondly, Elizabeth Sylvia Mary (?) on 17 January 1948.1 He died on 24 March 1956 at age 61.1
He was educated at Rugby School, Rugby, Warwickshire, England.1 He fought in the First World War, in Egypt and Salonika.1 He gained the rank of Captain in 1916 in the service of the 2nd East Surrey Regiment.1 He was with the Indian Civil Service between 1920 and 1948.1 He graduated from King's College, Cambridge University, Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, England, in 1925 with a Master of Arts (M.A.).1 He was admitted to Gray's Inn in 1926 entitled to practice as a Barrister-at-Law.1 He was invested as a Companion, Order of the Indian Empire (C.I.E.) in 1937.1 He was invested as a Companion, Order of the Star of India (C.S.I.) in 1947.1
