Sir John Digby Atholl Oakeley, 8th Bt. was born on 27 November 1932.2 He was the son of Sir Edward Atholl Oakeley, 7th Bt. and Patricia Mabel Mary Birtchnell.2 He married Maureen Frances Cox, daughter of John Cox, on 16 March 1958.2 He died on 19 December 2016 at age 84.3
He twice represented UK yachting at the Olympic Games.2 He wrote the book Winning, published 1968.2 He was managing director of Miller and Whitworth between 1972 and 1981.2 He wrote the book Sailing Manual, published 1980.2 He wrote the book Downwind Sailing, published 1981.2 He was managing director of Freedom Yachts between 1981 and 1988.2 He succeeded as the 8th Baronet Oakeley, of Shrewsbury [G.B., 1790] in 1987.1 He was manager of Dehler Yachts UK between 1988 and 1997.2 He lived in 2003 at 10 Bursledon Heights, Long Lane, Bursledon, Hampshire, England.2
