     Edith Mary Snell was the daughter of Major Charles Snell and Ann Alicia Todd.1 She married Robert Ormond Maugham, son of Robert Maugham.2 She died in 1882.
     Her married name became Maugham.2

     Sir Frederick Herbert Maugham, 1st Viscount Maugham was born on 20 October 1866 at Paris, France.1 He was the son of Robert Ormond Maugham and Edith Mary Snell.1 He was baptised in November 1866 at Paris, France.1 He married Helen Mary Romer, daughter of Rt. Hon. Sir Robert Romer and Bettie Lemon, on 19 December 1896.1 He died on 23 March 1958 at age 91.2
     Sir Frederick Herbert Maugham, 1st Viscount Maugham was educated at Dover College, England.1 He was educated at Trinity Hall, Cambridge University, Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, England.1 He was admitted to Lincoln's Inn in 1890 entitled to practice as a Barrister-at-Law.1 He was invested as a King's Counsel (K.C.) in 1913.1 He held the office of Bencher of Lincoln's Inn in 1915.1 He was invested as a Knight in 1928.1 He wrote the book The Case of Jean Calas, published 1928.1 He held the office of Judge of the High Court, Chancery Division between 1928 and 1934.1 He held the office of Lord Justice of Appeal in 1934.1 He was invested as a Privy Counsellor (P.C.) on 26 February 1934.1 He was created Baron Maugham, of Hartfield in the County of Sussex [U.K. Law Lord] on 7 October 1935.1 He held the office of Lord of Appeal in Ordinary on 7 October 1935.1 He wrote the book The Tichborne Case, published 1936.1 He was awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of Law (LL.D.) by Cambridge University, Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, England, in 1938.1 He held the office of Lord High Chancellor of Great Britain in 1938.1 He was created 1st Viscount Maugham, of Hartfield, co. Sussex [U.K.] on 22 September 1939.2

     Helen Mary Romer was the daughter of Rt. Hon. Sir Robert Romer and Bettie Lemon.1 She married Sir Frederick Herbert Maugham, 1st Viscount Maugham, son of Robert Ormond Maugham and Edith Mary Snell, on 19 December 1896.1 She died on 12 October 1950.2
     From 19 December 1896, her married name became Maugham. As a result of her marriage, Helen Mary Romer was styled as Viscountess Maugham on 22 September 1939.

     Rt. Hon. Sir Robert Romer was born on 28 December 1840.1 He was the son of Frank Romer and Mary Lydia Cudworth.2 He married Bettie Lemon, daughter of Mark Lemon, in 1864.3 He died on 19 March 1918 at age 77.3
     Rt. Hon. Sir Robert Romer graduated from Trinity Hall, Cambridge University, Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, England, with a (an unknown value).2 He was Professor of Mathematics between 1865 and 1866 at Queen's College, Cork, County Cork, Ireland.2 He was admitted to Lincoln's Inn in 1867 entitled to practice as a Barrister-at-Law.3 He was invested as a Queen's Counsel (Q.C.) in 1881.3 He held the office of Bencher of Lincoln's Inn.3 He was invested as a Knight Bachelor in 1890.2 He held the office of Judge of the High Court, Chancery Division between 1890 and 1899.3 He was invested as a Privy Counsellor (P.C.) in 1899.2 He held the office of Lord Justice of Appeal between 1899 and 1906.2 He was invested as a Fellow, Royal Society (F.R.S.).2 He was invested as a Knight Grand Cross, Order of the Bath (G.C.B.) in 1901.4
