     He held the office of Deputy Lieutenant (D.L.) of Lanarkshire.1 He held the office of Justice of the Peace (J.P.) for Dunbartonshire.1 He held the office of Deputy Lieutenant (D.L.) of Glasgow.1 He held the office of Justice of the Peace (J.P.) for Glasgow.1 He held the office of Lord Provost of Glasgow University.1 He held the office of Lord-Lieutenant of the City of Glasgow between 1917 and 1920.1 He was awarded the Ordre national de la Légion d'honneur.1 He was created 1st Baronet Stewart, of Balgownie, co. Dunbarton [U.K.] on 10 December 1920.1
