     He was educated at Bedford School, Bedford, Bedfordshire, England.1 He graduated from Pembroke College, Cambridge University, Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, England, with a Bachelor of Medicine (M.B.)1 He graduated from Pembroke College, Cambridge University, Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, England, with a Bachelor of Surgery (B.Ch.)1 He fought in the Second World War. He gained the rank of Major in the Royal Army Medical Corps.1 He was registered as a Member, Royal College of Physicians, London (M.R.C.P.) in 1946.1 He was appointed Fellow, Royal College of Physicians, London (F.R.C.P.) in 1959.1
