     Captain James Cook was born on 27 October 1728 at Middlesbrough, Yorkshire, England.1 He was the son of James Cook and Grace Page.1 He married Elizabeth Batts on 21 December 1762 at St. Margaret's Church, Barking, Essex, England.1 He died on 14 February 1779 at age 50 at Hawaii, U.S.A., killed in a scuffle with natives.1
     Between 1769 and 1771 commander of the expedition to observe the transit of Venus in Tahiti, and discovered New Zealand and New South Wales.2 He was commander of a second expedition to New Zealand and Antarctica between 1772 and 1775.2 He gained the rank of Captain in the Royal Navy.1 He was commander of a third expedition, to find the North-West Passage from the Pacific.2
