Guy Lawrence Charteris was born on 23 May 1886.2 He was the son of Hugo Richard Charteris, 11th Earl of Wemyss and Mary Constance Wyndham.2 He married, firstly, Frances Lucy Tennant, daughter of Francis John Tennant and Annie Geraldine Redmayne, on 23 July 1912.3 He married, secondly, Violet Porter, daughter of Alfred Charles Masterton Porter, on 5 October 1945.2 He died on 21 September 1967 at age 81.2
     He was educated at Eton College, Windsor, Berkshire, England.2 He graduated from Trinity College, Cambridge University, Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, England, in 1911 with a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.)2 He gained the rank of Captain in the Scots Guards (SR.)2
