     Melville Portal was born on 31 July 1819.2 He was the son of John Portal and Elizabeth Drummond. He married Lady Charlotte Mary Elliot-Murray-Kynynmound, daughter of Gilbert Elliot-Murray-Kynynmound, 2nd Earl of Minto and Mary Brydone, on 9 October 1855.2 He died on 24 January 1904 at age 84.2
     He graduated with a Master of Arts (M.A.)2 He was a practising barrister.2 He was chairman of the Quarter Sessions (Q.S.)2 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for North Hampshire between 1849 and 1857.2 He held the office of Justice of the Peace (J.P.)2 He held the office of Deputy Lieutenant (D.L.)2 He held the office of High Sheriff of Hampshire in 1863.2 They also had a daughter who died unmarried.2 He lived at Laverstoke House, Hampshire, EnglandG.1

     Colonel Warner J. L.
