     Captain Alexander Campbell was born on 6 September 1839.1 He was the son of William Campbell and Marianne McCullagh.2 He married, firstly, Jane Grimshaw, daughter of Weston Grimshaw and Jane Campbell, in 1872.1 He married, secondly, Ellinore Mary Louise Purdon, daughter of Dr. Richard Purdon, on 1 September 1908.1 He died on 3 October 1914 at age 75.1
     He was Officer, Mercantile Marine between 1855 and 1865.1 He was commissioned in 1865, in the service of the Bombay Marine.1 He gained the rank of Captain in the Royal Indian Marines.1 He fought in the Abyssinian Expedition.1 He fought in the Egyptian Expedition.1 He fought in the Burma Expedition between 1885 and 1886, as Chief Marine Transport Officer, and was mentioned in despatches.1 He was awarded the Distinguished Service Order (D.S.O.) in 1887.1 He was Deputy Director, Royal Indian Marines between 1887 and 1894.1 He was appointed Companion, Order of the Indian Empire (C.I.E.) in 1893.1 He lived at Rathgall, Bedford, Bedfordshire, EnglandG.1
