     Richard John Carew Chartres, Baron Chartres was born on 11 July 1947.1 He is the son of Richard Arthur Carew Chartres and Charlotte Day.3 He married Caroline McLintock, daughter of Sir Charles Alan McLintock and Sylvia Taylor.4
     He was educated at Hertford College, Oxford University, Oxford, Oxfordshire, EnglandG.1 He was educated at Trinity College, Cambridge University, Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, EnglandG.1 He was ordained in 1974.1 He lived in 1976 at 17 St. Andrew's Road, Bedford, Bedfordshire, EnglandG.1 He was the Curate at Saint Andrew's, Bedford, Bedfordshire, EnglandG.1 He was Professor of Divinity between 1987 and 1992 at Gresham College, London, England.2 He held the office of Bishop of Stepney between 1992 and 1995.2 He was appointed Privy Counsellor (P.C.) in 1995.2 He held the office of Bishop of London in 1995.2 He was appointed Knight Commander, Royal Victorian Order (K.C.V.O.)4 He was created Baron Chartres, of Wilton in the County of Wiltshire [U.K. Life Peer] on 7 November 2017.4 He was appointed Knight Grand Cross, Royal Victorian Order (G.C.V.O.) in 2019.5

     He fought in the Second World War.1 He gained the rank of Lieutenant in the 5th Royal Gurkha Rifles.3
