     Penelope Susannah Mathew was born circa 1764. She was the daughter of Maj.-Gen. Edward Mathew and Lady Jane Bertie.2,1 She married, firstly, David Dewar, son of George Dewar and Christina Panton, in 1787.1 She married, secondly, Charles Brownlow Cumberland, son of Richard Cumberland and Elizabeth Ridge, on 23 October 1799 at St. James' Church, London, England, in a with a dowry of £40,000 marriage.1,3 She died on 27 August 1828.3 She was buried on 29 August 1828 at Leghorn, Italy.3
     From 1787, her married name became Dewar. From 23 October 1799, her married name became Cumberland.1
