     Lt.-Col. James Auchinleck Dane was born on 18 May 1883.¹ He was the son of Richard Martin Dane and Kate Barnes.² He married Elgiva Mary Kathorn Fitzwilliam, daughter of Hon. William Thomas FitzWilliam and Elgiva Mary Kinglake, on 9 October 1909.¹ He died on 20 January 1927 at age 43.¹
     He was educated at Portora Royal School, Enniskillen, County Fermanagh, Ireland^G.¹ He was commissioned in 1902, in the service of the Royal Artillery.¹ He was educated at Royal Military Academy, Woolwich, Kent, England^G.¹ He fought in the First World War, where he was mentioned in despatches three times.¹ He was awarded the Distinguished Service Order (D.S.O.) in 1917.¹ He gained the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel in the 84th East Anglian Field Brigade, Royal Field Artillery.¹ He held the office of Deputy Lieutenant (D.L.)¹ He lived at Harpley Lodge, King's Lynn, Norfolk, England^G.¹
