     He was educated at Canford School, Wimborne, Dorset, EnglandG.1 He fought in the Second World War.1 He gained the rank of Squadron Leader in the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve.1 He graduated from Balliol College, Oxford University, Oxford, Oxfordshire, EnglandG, in 1947 with a Master of Arts (M.A.)1
