     Sir James McGrigor, 1st Bt. was born on 9 April 1771.1 He was the son of Colquhoun McGrigor and Ann Grant.2 He married Mary Grant, daughter of Duncan Grant of Mullochard, Strathspey, on 23 June 1810.1 He died on 2 April 1858 at age 86.1
     He graduated from Edinburgh University, Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland, with a Master of Arts (M.A.)1 He graduated from Edinburgh University, Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland, with a Doctor of Medicine (M.D.)1 He gained the rank of in 1793 in the Army medical department.1 He gained the rank of Surgeon in the 88th Connaught Rangers, served in Holland, Flanders, West Indies and India.1 He was appointed Fellow, Royal Society (F.R.S.)1 He gained the rank of Superintending Surgeon in 1801 in the Egypt.1 He was Inspector-General of Hospitals in 1809.1 He was Chief of Medical Staff, Wellington's Army in the Peninsula in 1811.1 He was appointed Knight in 1814.1 He was Director-General of the Army Medical Department between 1815 and 1851.1 He was appointed Fellow, Royal College of Physicians, London (F.R.C.P.)1 He was created 1st Baronet McGrigor, of Campden Hill, co. Middlesex [U.K.] on 30 September 1831.1 He was appointed Knight Commander, Order of the Bath (K.C.B.) in 1851.1
