     Colonel Edward Hugh Bethell was born in 1854 at Rise, Yorkshire, EnglandG.1 He was the son of William Froggatt Bethell and Elizabeth Beckett-Denison.1 He married, firstly, Gertrude Hill, daughter of Maj.-Gen. Eustace George Hill and Cecilia Wheatley Eliott, on 15 December 1881 at Aurangabad, Madras, IndiaG.1 He married, secondly, Annie Lonsdale, daughter of John Gylby Lonsdale and Sarah Martineau Jardine, in 1890 at Lichfield, Staffordshire, EnglandG.1
     He gained the rank of Captain in the Royal Engineers.1 He was awarded the Distinguished Service Order (D.S.O.)1 He was appointed Companion, Order of St. Michael and St. George (C.M.G.)1
