     Richard Miles Backhouse was born on 9 April 1911.1 He was the son of Admiral Sir Roger Roland Charles Backhouse and Dora Louise Findlay.1 He married, firstly, Angela Mary Haig-Thomas, daughter of Peter Haig-Thomas and Lady Alexandra Henrietta Alice Agar, on 9 June 1948.1 He and Angela Mary Haig-Thomas were divorced in 1951.1 He married, secondly, Edeltraud Margaretha Perz, daughter of Hofrat Dr. Hans Perz, on 21 December 1951.1 He died on 23 September 1969 at age 58.1
