     James Smithson was born illegitimately in 1765 at Paris, France.1,2 He was the son of Hugh Percy, 1st Duke of Northumberland and Elizabeth Hungerford Keate.1 He died on 27 June 1829 at Genoa, Italy.1,2
     He was given the name of Jacques-Louis Macie at birth.2 He was educated in 1786 at Pembroke College, Oxford University, Oxford, Oxfordshire, England, Bachelor of Arts (B.A.)2 He was appointed Fellow, Royal Society (F.R.S.) on 26 April 1787.2 He was founding donor of the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C.1
