     Sir Robert Hay, 8th Bt. was born on 8 May 1825.1 He was the son of Sir Adam Hay, 7th Bt. and Henrietta Callender Grant.1 He married Sarah Duncan, daughter of A. Duncan, in August 1853.1 He died on 30 May 1885 at age 60.1
     He succeeded as the 8th Baronet Hay, of Smithfield, co. Peebles [N.S., 1635] on 18 January 1867.1

     He gained the rank of Major in the King's Own Scottish Borderers.1
