     Sir Edward Herbert was born between 1645 and 1648.1 He was the son of Edward Herbert and Margaret Smith.1 He died on 8 November 1698.1
     He was educated at Winchester College, Winchester, Hampshire, England.1 He graduated from New College, Oxford University, Oxford, Oxfordshire, England, in 1669 with a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.)1 He was admitted to Inner Temple in 1675 entitled to practise as a barrister.1 He was appointed King's Counsel (K.C.) in 1677.1 He held the office of Bencher of Inner Temple in 1682.1 He was Chancellor of Regalities and Temporalities for County Tipperary before February 1681/82.1 He held the office of Chief Justice of Chester and Flint in 1683.1 He was appointed Knight in February 1683/84.1 He was Serjeant-at-Law in 1685.1 He held the office of Chief Justice of the King's Bench in 1685.1 He was appointed Privy Counsellor (P.C.) in 1685.1 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Ludlow between 1685 and 1687.1 He held the office of Chief Justice of the Court of Common Pleas from 1687 to 1688.1 Between December 1688 and 1690 he was King James II in France and Ireland.1 In February 1689/90 he was outlawed in England for high treason.1 He was created !st Earl of Portland [England] before 20 February 1692/93, Jacobite.1
