     He was educated at Edinburgh Academy, Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland.1 He gained the rank of officer in 1914 in the Royal Engineers.1 He fought in the First World War between 1914 and 1918.1 He gained the rank of officer in 1916 in the Royal Flying Corps.1 He gained the rank of Major in the Royal Engineers.1 He fought in the Second World War between 1939 and 1945.1 He was awarded the Territorial Decoration (T.D.)1
