     William Henry Gardiner Baird was born on 11 October 1914.1 He was the son of William Frank Gardiner Baird and Violet Mary Croft.1 He married, firstly, Helen Mary Rich, daughter of Edward Charles Rich, on 10 October 1946.1 He and Helen Mary Rich were divorced in 1966.1 He married, secondly, Catherine Gwendolyn Smart, daughter of James Smart, in 1966.1 He died in 1989.1
     William Henry Gardiner Baird was educated at Eton College, Eton, Berkshire, England.1 He fought in the Second World War.1 He gained the rank of Major in the service of the Bombay Grenadiers.1
