     Sir Edward Bates, 1st Bt. was born on 17 March 1816.1 He was the son of Joseph Bates and Rebekah Walker.1 He married, firstly, Charlotte Elizabeth Umfreville-Smith, daughter of Cornelius Umfreville-Smith, in 1837.1 He married, secondly, Ellen Thompson, daughter of Thomas Thompson, on 25 June 1844.1 He died on 17 October 1896 at age 80.1
     He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) (Conservative) for Plymouth between 1871 and 1880.1 He held the office of Deputy Lieutenant (D.L.) of Hampshire.1 He held the office of Justice of the Peace (J.P.) for Lancashire.1 He held the office of Deputy Lieutenant (D.L.) of Lancashire.1 He was created 1st Baronet Bates, of Bellefield, co. Lancaster [U.K.] on 13 May 1880.1 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) (Conservative) for Plymouth between 1885 and 1892.1 He lived at Manydown Park, Hampshire, EnglandG.1 He lived at Gyrn Caste, Flintshire, WalesG.1
     He had three daughters by his first wife.1

     Gilbert Thompson Bates was born on 22 April 1847.1 He was the son of Sir Edward Bates, 1st Bt. and Ellen Thompson.1 He married Charlotte Thaxter Warren, daughter of George Warren, on 13 July 1876.1 He died on 30 March 1917 at age 69.1
     He held the office of Justice of the Peace (J.P.) for Renfrewshire.1
