     Sir Edward Bates, 1st Bt. was born on 17 March 1816.¹ He was the son of Joseph Bates and Rebekah Walker.¹ He married, firstly, Charlotte Elizabeth Umfreville-Smith, daughter of Cornelius Umfreville-Smith, in 1837.¹ He married, secondly, Ellen Thompson, daughter of Thomas Thompson, on 25 June 1844.¹ He died on 17 October 1896 at age 80.¹
     Sir Edward Bates, 1st Bt. held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) (Conservative) for Plymouth between 1871 and 1880.¹ He held the office of Deputy Lieutenant (D.L.) of Hampshire.¹ He held the office of Deputy Lieutenant (D.L.) of Lancashire.¹ He held the office of Justice of the Peace (J.P.) for Lancashire.¹ He was created 1st Baronet Bates, of Bellefield, co. Lancaster [U.K.] on 13 May 1880.¹ He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) (Conservative) for Plymouth between 1885 and 1892.¹ He lived at Manydown Park, Hampshire, England.¹ He lived at Gyrn Caste, Flintshire, Wales.¹
     He had three daughters by his first wife.¹

     Charlotte Thaxter Warren was born before 1861. She was the daughter of George Warren.¹ She married Gilbert Thompson Bates, son of Sir Edward Bates, 1st Bt. and Ellen Thompson, on 13 July 1876.¹ She died on 27 November 1936.¹
