     Colonel Denis Haughton Bates was born on 25 August 1886.1 He was the son of Sir Edward Percy Bates, 2nd Bt. and Constance Elizabeth Graves.1 He married Aline Mary Crook, daughter of Edward Tipping Crook, on 12 December 1922.1 He died on 13 September 1959 at age 73.1
     Colonel Denis Haughton Bates gained the rank of Colonel in the service of the Territorial Army.1 He gained the rank of Honorary Colonel in the service of the Duke of Lancaster's Own Yeomanry.1 He fought in the First World War between 1914 and 1919, where he was mentioned in despatches.1 He was decorated with the Territorial Decoration (T.D.).1 He was decorated with the Military Cross (M.C.).1 He was chairman of Cunard Steam Ship Company and Cunard White Star.1

     Major Philip Edward Bates was born on 19 July 1925.1 He was the son of Colonel Denis Haughton Bates and Aline Mary Crook.1 He married Mary Patricia Carol Bell, daughter of Lt.-Col. Clive Vincent Moberly Bell, on 22 April 1952.1 He died on 29 February 2000 at age 74.1
     Major Philip Edward Bates was educated at Shrewsbury School, Shrewsbury, Shropshire, England.1 He gained the rank of Major in the service of the Royal Marines (Commando).1 He fought in the Second World War.1
